When to Go
Diving around Koh Samui is possible year-round, but the best conditions are typically from March to September, when underwater visibility can reach 30–35 metres. During this period, expect calm seas, warm waters, and spectacular marine encounters with sea turtles, majestic rays and whale sharks (if you’re lucky!)
1. Sail Rock (Hin Bai) – The Crown Jewel
The most famous dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, Sail Rock is a towering granite pinnacle renowned for spotting the majestic whale shark. It’s best known for its legendary vertical chimney swim-through and large pelagic visitors.

2. Koh Tao Dive Sites – Diver’s Playground
Less than 1.5 hours from Koh Samui, Koh Tao is considered a diving mecca of Southeast Asia, boasting over 20 dive sites. From shallow coral gardens for beginners to deep pinnacles and wrecks for advanced divers, there’s something for everyone.
Highlights: Hawksbill turtles, fusiliers, nudibranchs, vibrant coral reefs, wreck diving

3. Chumphon Pinnacle – Deep Dive Thrill
This site near Koh Tao is perfect for experienced divers. A massive granite formation blanketed in pink anemones drops to 30 metres, attracting grey reef sharks, barracudas, and trevallies.
Highlights: Deep dives, schooling batfish, large pelagics, whale sharks
Travel Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

4. Southwest Pinnacle – Coral Paradise
Expect stunning underwater scenery with submerged granite peaks draped in soft corals. Divers often spot snappers, batfish, and pelagic species here.
Highlights: Colourful soft corals, rich reef biodiversity, whale shark sightings
Travel Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Visibility: 10–30 metres

5. Koh Yippon & Koh Wao (Ang Thong National Marine Park) – Island Beauty
Located within the protected Ang Thong National Marine Park (the inspiration for Alex Garlanad’s cult classic, The Beach) these sites offer calm waters, dramatic swim-throughs, and thriving coral gardens, perfect for relaxed dives.
Highlights: Banded sea snakes, parrotfish, stingrays, caves, soft and hard coral gardens
Travel Time: 50 minutes
Visibility: 10–20 metres
